What drives you to work on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae elimination?
The most poorly understood area of pig and pork production (including disease elimination) is realistically determining the short-term and long-term value of what producers do and use – management practices, equipment, nutrition and feed, health management, capital investment – as well as appreciating the cost of all forms of risk exposure and the value of risk management for their businesses…I find working in the areas of risk, cost and value feeds my ongoing curiosity and provides a lot of intellectual satisfaction.

What drives you to work on Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae elimination?
There are many good reasons that I consider regarding Mycoplasma elimination, but probably the biggest is because we can. There now is a lot of good historic evidence that herds can stay negative for extended periods of time, and we can keep their offspring negative even in pig-dense areas through grow-finish, and be able to realize the benefits of elimination. With this, the time to pay back the expense of the project is short, and can have a long-expected return.
